Day-by-Day Route Breakdown
Day 1: Wallsend → Chollerford
50 km / 31.1 mi · 290m↑ · 255m↓ ·Leave Segedunum Roman Fort and run the Riverside Path along the Tyne through Newcastle's Quayside and beneath the city's bridges. Continue through Tyne Riverside Country Park and climb to Heddon-on-the-Wall, where you'll meet your first standing Roman wall by the Swan Inn. Push west along the Military Road through quiet farmland past Harlow Hill and the Robin Hood Inn at East Wallhouses, then over Port Gate and up to St Oswald's Church and Heavenfield, with sweeping Northumberland views. Pause briefly at Planetrees for a glimpse of broad and narrow wall construction, then descend through the village of Wall and across the River North Tyne to finish at Chollerford, beside the impressive Chesters cavalry fort.
Day 2: Chollerford → Lanercost
42.5 km / 26.4 mi · 560m↑ · 530m↓ ·The route's biggest day. From Chollerford, climb past Black Carts Turret to Limestone Corner, where massive uncut Roman stones still lie in place, then on past Brocolitia Fort and its Mithraeum onto the Great Whin Sill. Run the dramatic ridge over Sewingshields, through Housesteads — the most complete Roman fort on the wall — past Sycamore Gap and Highshield Crags above Crag Lough. Drop to Steel Rigg before climbing to Winshields Crags at 345m, the highest point on the entire wall. Descend via Cawfields Quarry, Walltown Crags and the Roman Army Museum to Greenhead, then cross fields to Gilsland and continue past Birdoswald Roman Fort and Willowford Bridge to finish at Lanercost Priory.
Day 3: Lanercost → Bowness-on-Solway
45.2 km / 28.1 mi · 130m↑ · 170m↓ ·A fast finish through the western lowlands. From Lanercost, field paths and farm tracks lead across Dovecote Bridge to Walton, then on through gentle farmland past Newtown and across King Water. Continue via Low Crosby, Brunstock and Rickerby Park, crossing Hadrian's Bridge into Carlisle with its medieval castle and Tullie House Museum. Pick up the River Eden west through Beaumont onto the flat Solway Marshes — watch tide times near Boustead Hill and Drumburgh. Pass through Burgh-by-Sands with its fortified Roman-stone church and King's Arms, then through Drumburgh and Port Carlisle, with the old canal still visible. The final salt-marsh stretch with its bird life leads to the King's Arms at Bowness-on-Solway and the western terminus.
