Day-by-Day Route Breakdown

Day 1: WallsendRobin Hood Inn

34.4 km / 21.4 mi · 180m↑ · 150m↓ ·

Start at Segedunum Roman Fort in Wallsend and follow the Riverside Path along the north bank of the Tyne, passing the former Swan Hunter shipyard and Newcastle's Quayside beneath the iconic bridges. Continue through Tyne Riverside Country Park, with The Keelman pub and Big Lamp Brewery available, before the path leaves the river and climbs steeply to Heddon-on-the-Wall and your first major section of standing Roman wall beside the Swan Inn. Beyond Heddon, follow the Military Road through quiet farmland with views opening to the Cheviot Hills, passing Harlow Hill's village tap before reaching the Robin Hood Inn at East Wallhouses for the night, with a 6km taxi detour available to Corbridge.

Day 2: Robin Hood InnOnce Brewed

34.8 km / 21.6 mi · 450m↑ · 380m↓ ·

Continue along the Military Road through rolling Northumberland countryside. Pass Port Gate roundabout, the site of a Roman gateway through the Stanegate, then St Oswald's Church and Heavenfield — marked by a wooden cross with panoramic views. Stop at Planetrees to see both broad and narrow wall construction, then descend through Wall to Chollerford. Cross the River North Tyne and visit Chesters Roman Fort and its bathhouse, then climb past Black Carts Turret and Limestone Corner, where uncut Roman stones still lie scattered. Beyond Brocolitia Fort and its Mithraeum, ascend onto the Great Whin Sill and follow the dramatic ridge through Sewingshields, Housesteads, Sycamore Gap and Highshield Crags, descending at Steel Rigg to Once Brewed.

Day 3: Once BrewedWalton

26.7 km / 16.6 mi · 210m↑ · 280m↓ ·

Climb back onto the crags from Once Brewed to Winshields Crags — at 345m the highest point on the wall, with spectacular views. Pass Caw Gap, Milecastle 42 and Cawfields Quarry, then follow Allolee Ridge past Walltown Crags and the Roman Army Museum down to Greenhead. Cross fields to Gilsland and the House of Meg tearoom, then continue past well-preserved wall sections to Birdoswald Roman Fort with its granaries and museum. Follow the dramatic Irthing cliffs and cross Willowford Bridge, passing Hare Hill — home to the tallest standing wall at 3 metres — before descending to Lanercost Priory. Field paths and farm tracks lead across Dovecote Bridge to Walton and Florries on the Wall café.

Day 4: WaltonBowness-on-Solway

41.8 km / 26 mi · 140m↑ · 170m↓ ·

From Walton, follow field boundaries across flat farmland with the vallum earthworks occasionally visible. Cross King Water stream and continue through gentle countryside via Newtown, Low Crosby and The Stag Inn, then through Brunstock with glimpses of the River Eden. Skirt Rickerby Park and cross Hadrian's Bridge into Carlisle, with its medieval castle and Tullie House Museum. Pick up the riverside path west through Beaumont, where the route opens onto the flat Solway Marshes — mind the tide times near Boustead Hill and Drumburgh. Pass through Burgh-by-Sands with its fortified church and King's Arms pub, near the monument to Edward I, then continue via Drumburgh and Port Carlisle to finish at Bowness-on-Solway.
